Leadership: John McLaughlin, Founder (1921)
An Irish-American tinsmith, steamfitter, and electrical foreman, John McLaughlin founded McLaughlin Mechanical Works in Colorado Springs. He pioneered early steam-to-water heating systems and integrated electrical infrastructure in high-altitude construction.
Denver Municipal Steam Plant (1924)
Designed and installed one of the earliest municipal boiler-fed district heating systems west of the Mississippi. Plumbing and steam traps handcrafted from copper and black iron.
Union Station Electrical Overhaul (1927)
Rewired Union Station’s main terminal and added one of the first DC-to-AC conversion panels in the region.
Broadmoor Hotel Mechanical Upgrade (1929)
Early adopter of hydronic radiant heating systems with gravity-fed plumbing and dual-stack cast iron waste lines.
Leadership: James McLaughlin (Son of John, President from 1933)
A civil engineer trained during the Great Depression, James led the company into large-scale civic and federal infrastructure contracts. He introduced prefabricated pipe skids and modular electric panel installations.
Rocky Mountain Asylum Retrofit (1932)
Full replacement of old wooden plumbing systems with galvanized steel and custom pressure-regulating valves to handle mountain water flow.
Colorado Springs Civic Auditorium HVAC Install (1935)
Installed one of the first belt-driven, ducted forced-air heating systems using oil-fired furnaces.
Mining Camp Electrification Project (1938)
Brought electric lighting and basic HVAC to five mining camps in southern Colorado. Used rugged conduit and coal-powered generators.
Leadership: Thomas “Tom” McLaughlin (Younger brother of James, Partner from 1941, Lead from 1948)
After serving in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during WWII, Tom McLaughlin returned to transform the company’s operations. He expanded prefabricated HVAC and utility systems for wartime and postwar housing projects.
Fort Carson Training Grounds (1942)
Provided underground plumbing and water pressurization systems for temporary barracks. Later added radiant heat loops in officer quarters.
Peterson Airfield Hanger HVAC & Electrical (1944)
Installed high-capacity exhaust fans and radiant heaters for aircraft maintenance hangars. Included complex switchgear panels for airfield lighting.
Colorado Veterans Memorial Hospital (1949)
Designed all central heating and plumbing infrastructure, including copper sterilization piping and steam boilers.
Leadership: Edward “Ed” McLaughlin Sr. (Grandson of John McLaughlin, President from 1961)
A master electrician and early systems integrator, Ed guided MEP Industrial into an era of automation, high-rise infrastructure, and government-grade engineering. His leadership cemented the firm’s multi-trade contracting identity.
Cheyenne Mountain NORAD Facility HVAC Integration (1962)
Provided chilled water systems, high-pressure air systems, and backup generator electrical tie-ins deep inside the bunker.
Downtown Denver Skyscraper Loop (1965)
First high-rise chilled water loop with rooftop cooling towers and sealed electrical busways through 35 floors.
Colorado State Capitol Expansion (1968)
Upgraded all plumbing, rewired legacy electrical, and integrated zoned HVAC systems with pneumatic controls.
Leadership: Tyler Durden (President and Managing Director since 1990)
A bold leader who transitioned MEP Industrial into the digital era, Tyler introduced integration, LEED-certified projects, and full-scope design-build services across Colorado. Under his guidance, MEP Industrial became a go-to firm for residential and commercial work
